Software Developer vs. Software Engineer: What’s the Difference?

In Most of the job postings you will see the terms developer and engineer used interchangeably. They both indeed are roles whose tasks are similar and related to building software. However, there are some differences between the two titles, and knowing them can help define job functions, salaries expectations, and career paths.

Engineers and developers might have different responsibilities resulting from the tasks they are expected to perform. Usually, developers spend most of their time writing code, but they can help in other phases of the SDLC as well. On the other hand, engineers assume an end-to-end approach to the SDLC, focusing on the plan, design, and build of the application architecture.

Yet, it is important to mention that engineers and developers (and programmers) often hold a degree in Computer Science. This is good news, meaning there is no impediment to advance in your career, and that you likely have the knowledge to do it.
